President and CEO
Jani joined Ad Standards in 2016, as President and Chief Executive Officer. A renowned leader in the Canadian advertising industry, Jani has over 30 years of industry experience, most recently at the Institute of Communication Agencies (ICA), where she served as President for nine years. Before her time at the ICA, Jani held various senior roles within a number of leading Canadian communication agencies. A tireless volunteer both in the advertising and marketing industry and in civic society, Jani is currently on the ACTRA Fraternal Benefits Society’s Board of Governors, a CASSIES judge and serves as a member of the Humber Advisory Board. Jani is also a CMA accredited Chartered Marketer, having received her designation in 2019.
Chief Legal & Policy Officer
Catherine Bate joined Ad Standards in 2019 as the Chief Legal & Policy Officer. She is a recognized leader in the field of marketing, advertising and consumer product regulatory law in Canada. Previously, Catherine chaired the marketing and advertising law groups of two national law firms. While in private practice, Catherine advised clients on issues ranging from consumer marketing and advertising strategies, promotions and sweepstakes, and data privacy practices. She also advised clients on consumer protection matters, product claims, labelling compliance, and navigating the rules around specially regulated products. Catherine holds a J.D. from the University of Toronto and is a member of the Canadian Bar Association.
Vice President, Clearance Services
As Vice President, Ad Standards Clearance Services, Nicole leads the preclearance team, ensuring superior quality, integrity and service for Ad Standards' customers. Nicole is also Chair of the Children’s Clearance Committee and an active participant on the Consumer Health Product Advertising Advisory Council (CHPAAC), the Cosmetic Advertising Advisory Group (CAAG) and the Food Advisory Council (FAC). Nicole joined Ad Standards in 2002, bringing over 20 years of experience in advertising, working with a wide range of major national and international clients in agencies in Montreal and Toronto. She has expertise in a number of relevant business sectors, including packaged goods, restaurants and cosmetics, is fluently bilingual, and has an excellent knowledge of communications in English and French markets.
Vice President, Standards
As Vice President, Standards, Janet is responsible for the administration of the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards and the complaint procedures under the Code. She is also the administrator of the Canadian Children’s Food & Beverage Advertising Initiative (CAI) – a voluntary initiative of 19 of Canada’s leading food and beverage companies that are committed to promoting and supporting healthy dietary choices and healthy lifestyles to children under 12 years of age. Janet has an extensive background in regulatory affairs, policy development, and government relations. Prior to joining Ad Standards in 1999, Janet spent ten years in the Ontario government as Manager, Gaming Policy with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, and as Senior Policy Analyst with the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations. Janet holds an LL.B. from Queen’s University and is a member of the Canadian Bar Association.
Director, Member Relations
Randy joined Ad Standards in 2013 as Director, Member Relations. He oversees member relations, recruitment, and initiatives. Prior to his time with Ad Standards, Randy gained business development experience in the sponsorship industry with The Partnership Group and helped build organizational capacity for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada through their national partnership program. Randy was a member of the national Diving Team and represented Canada at numerous international competitions, including the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and continues to coach recreational and elite divers today.
Communications Manager (Quebec)
Danielle is Ad Standards' Communications Manager in Montreal. She has studied communications and advertising and is responsible for consumers’ complaints, public and media relations as well as industry relations in French Canada. Danielle previously worked as an Ad Standards analyst from 1995-1998. Since then, she has worked for Radio-Canada and its all-news channel (RDI) in media relations, communications and program promotion.
As Office Manager, Jennifer is responsible for overseeing day-to-day office operations, as well as managing Human Resources, keeping policies current and acting as administrator for the Board of Directors. She has been with Ad Standards since 2005 and previously worked in the marketing/advertising industry. Jennifer attended Ryerson, where she studied Marketing, and is currently enrolled in the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) Online Academic Program.
