Advisory to the Public: Political and Elections Advertising
Political ads are outside Ad Standards' scope
Ad Standards does not accept complaints about political advertisements or election advertisements because these types of ads are excluded from the application of the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards (the Code).
For more information read the “Exclusions” section in the Code and Interpretation Guideline #6.
What constitutes political advertising?
Political advertising includes ads about:
- Political parties
- Political candidates
- Issues being debated at the government level
What constitutes election advertising?
Election advertising includes political advertising that is communicated to the public within a timeframe that starts the day after a vote is called and ends the day after the vote is held.
Why doesn't Ad Standards handle complaints about political ads?
While truth in advertising is important and political ads should follow the standards set in the Code, Ad Standards does not intervene in political debates during and outside of election periods.
The Code is not intended to govern or restrict the free expression of public opinion or ideas through political advertising or election advertising. However, we do encourage political advertisers to maintain truthful, fair and accurate messaging.
What complaints can Ad Standards accept?
Ad Standards accepts complaints about all other types of advertising content. This may include advocacy group ads on controversial issues, as long as these issues are not currently being debated at the government level.
You can submit complaints about ads through our online form or by mail. For more information, see How to Submit a Complaint.
Where to direct concerns about political ads
If you have concerns about a political or election advertisement, we recommend contacting the party or organization responsible for the ad directly.
