Public Representative, Children’s Clearance Committee

Public (Parent) Representation on the Children’s Clearance Committee is an important component in ensuring that children’s broadcast advertising adheres to the Broadcast Code for Advertising to Children, a Code that recognizes and respects the special characteristics of the child audience.

Each children’s commercial must be reviewed and approved by the Children’s Committee and carry a valid Ad Standards approval number prior to broadcast on Canadian television. The Children’s Committee is chaired by a senior Ad Standards staff member and includes representatives from the advertising industry, public and private broadcasters, and public (parent) representatives.

The Committee meets every other Monday morning from 9:15 – 11:00 a.m. ET for most of the year and every Monday during the busy period from September to November. View the schedule of meetings for the Children’s Clearance Committee. Public Representatives receive a small honorarium.

Applicants interested in volunteering for the Public Representative position(s), must meet the following criteria:

  • Have children between the ages of 5 and 11 who attend school and watch television.
  • Be available to attend Children’s Committee meetings during the Monday timeframe.
  • Be able to respond to same-day email requests on a regular basis throughout the week.

If you would like to be considered for a Public Representative volunteer position, apply now by sending a letter, briefly outlining your interest in the Committee and your resumé to volunteer@adstandards.ca
